About Amy Hoedemakers

Lately, my work has become more abstract and surprisingly I have come back to explore concepts that I was interested in at the beginning of my painting career.

To begin with, I use sketches, titles, words, memories and photos as reference points. I am predominantly inspired by the natural world and immerse myself in landscapes. I work rapidly on multiple sized canvases at the same time and draw on the emotional response that I want to resonate in my work. I love the process of painting, taking off paint, re-applying, review and so on. With regard to the formal elements of painting, I look at colour, form and composition, and question how these components are working within each work.

My paintings are structured around themes of; emotional points of departure, family and dreams. I use landscape images, colours and titles to portray these concepts. Sometimes the subject matter is clearly representative as landscape, which is then displaced by abstract elements.

I graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and have exhibited in solo and group shows within New Zealand and Ireland. My work is held in private and public collections within New Zealand, Ireland, England and Australia. My painting ‘Waiting’ was featured on the month of March in ‘Craigs Investment Partners Calendar, 2015’ for emerging and emerged artists and more recently I was shortlisted for the ZAFAA18 Awards (Zonta Ashburton Female Art Award).

I’m based in Oxford, where I currently work from my home studio.
