Tauawhi Pīwakawaka

Original ink drawing

This artwork is of a very friendly pair of Fantails (Piwakawaka) that Hannah photographed at Kina Beach, Tasman while on a bird watching trip in the South Island. The Maori word ‘Tauawhi’ translates to hug, embrace and support (one another) as Fantails are very social birds and are often found happily, roosting together in cold weather.
