Commissioned for Socially Distanced Yet Creatively Connected, an exhibition in response to the global pandemic and inspired by our collective experience of lockdown.
As per my usual process I generally don't plan my work aside from the colours I use. As a result, my work is somewhat an unconscious response to my environment. During lockdown I was by myself, which as a hermity artist, I'm totally ok with. For a little while at least. However, I found myself navigating the shift of pace with a sense of inquisitive restlessness. I didn't try to push it to settle or mean anything; as much as I could I just went with it. For me Clown Alley embodies that energy- playful dreaminess and it takes me straight back to that head space I was in during lockdown. Sometimes I wish I could go back there. I'm grateful for that time and will always remember it as a time of growth and reflection.
