Finnish ceramic artist Wilhelmiina Drummond creates her ethereal and whimsical sculptures in her Hamilton studio. Ever since starting in 2016, the focus of her practice has been the ancient Japanese firing technique Raku. Wilhelmiina really treasures the contrasting elements Raku provides both with its perilous process and its uniquely wild and temperamental surface finishes. It so wonderfully compliments the work she creates from researching the myths and histories of the cultures she feels connected with. It also provides a depth to her more light hearted and playful pieces.
She finds inspiration in the contrasting elements of life around her as well as the contrasts within herself. Feelings of extreme joy and happiness versus the deep dark caverns of sorrow. Lightness and weight, being injured and healing to ones true self. All these themes play a strong part in her creative process. Finding the right surfaces and shades of light and dark, to bring life into the imagery that she finds within.
Drummond had her first solo exhibition “Space Between” in Parnell 2018 followed by another solo “Apertures” in 2019.
She has exhibited in multiple mixed exhibitions around Auckland and Waikato including The Art in the Park in Auckland 2021.
Wilhelmiina is currently working on multiple different new projects and is very excited to be also working towards the next Art in the Park show in 2022.
