About Janice Napper
Janice Napper is a contemporary NZ multi-media artist. From her studio in St Heliers she utilises a rich high gloss palette to generate distinctively vibrant artworks.
Originally from Otago she pursued a career in Advertising working for newspapers and advertising agencies before moving to Auckland as head of Marketing for a Consumer Products company. After the birth of her second child she left the corporate world and established a ceramic painting franchise whilst concentrating on becoming a full-time artist.
“I wanted to create the glass like look of ceramics but in a large 2-dimensional form. To have all that paint glistening ‘wet’ hanging vertically in front of me in a solid state.”
She was one of the early adopters of resin and gel coat when they were still only available as industrial products. Drawn to the shiny smooth surfaces of lacquer and Perspex Janice paints intuitively, often working from rough drawings while tackling the complex technical challenges involved in working with polymer and resin on a large scale. The fluidity of these captivating works exudes a confidence from this self-taught artist pushing her mediums to the limit.
Like many she draws her subject matter from living things often with the detail stripped away and reflecting the essence of things New Zealand. However an increasingly large portion of her work is now devoted to her love of abstract and form. The colour and graduation of hue is the initial seduction of these works and the repetitive geometry of the composition with alchemic reactions of the mediums, also evokes objects of hidden interest for the viewer.
Her background in advertising is evident in her cutting-edge creative ideas coupled with a strong understanding of design and composition. Janice’s constantly evolving artworks
have gained increased recognition both here in Aotearoa and Internationally and is keenly sought after by domestic and corporate
