Philippa Bentley

acrylic on canvas

405 x 300mm

Commissioned for Socially Distanced Yet Creatively Connected, an exhibition in response to the global pandemic and inspired by our collective experience of lockdown.

Artist's statement:

Sea charts record the explored, known world reassuring us- we know where we’re going, it's all mapped out. However with the pandemic and increasing environmental concerns we are in uncharted waters. My painting re-imagines Tamaki Strait and our inner islands with a shifted world view and re-charts it to show familiar, recognisable islands lying alongside human forms, portrayed not as distant observers/recorders but as islands, part of the map itself. The islands are content and peaceful, shown in harmonious co-existence with their environment and clearly part of nature, not separate from it. A new way to navigate the Anthropocene; finding a way forward.
